1989 Notes & Anecdotes
Duck Hat
Tresco - The much-maligned duck hat returns with vengeance during our batting reply. Captain Tim rules that a person recording a duck wears the hat until the next duck is recorded which has the bizarre effect of encouraging players to will others out for nought in order to transfer the hat. Just two balls are delivered when Steve Taylor makes his return from the wicket complaining that the ball had tunnelled beneath his bat as he defended and about five players rush up to him to award the hat. He sits with legs crossed on the grassy knoll and laughs. But the cumbersome headwear sits on his head for less than thirty seconds, the time required for the next batsman to be dismissed for naught. Unimpressed, Captain Tim continues to eat his tea throughout the drama of two further wickets tumbling in quick succession. |

An early tour ‘joke’ is the existence of genital eating wildflowers on Tresco – most probably Belladonna. Notes on the 1989 Tour discuss the abundance and danger of a hitherto uncategorised plant genus 'Molyoptus Genitaliptus Merci'. The rumour and develops abound when Captain Tim and others complain of a mild skin rash after walking 'off piste' on the island. Such Blatant Nudity!
Saturday – Owing to the unbelievable hot September weather the beach at Porthcressa is for all intents and purposes packed. Peter knots a handkerchief creating a makeshift hat and lays in the sun on his towel with his head resting on a beach ball. Others less prepared strip to their underpants and sit on the hot sand. The sun is blazing and after half an hour many opt to swim to cool down. Peter has a wonderful time diving and flapping in the cold crystal-clear water and on his return wraps himself in a towel – or so he thought – for the moment he is off guard the towel is pulled away and he is forced to sit naked on the hot sand for many minutes. Fred on the Piano
Friday - Following the game, we retire to the Turks. Within moments a man performs an autopsy on the pianoforte inn the bar by removing the front casing panel. After sorting through pages of tarnished manuscripts contained in a time beaten brown leather folder that bears the name ‘Fred’ he rolls up the sleeves of a heavy cotton shirt, twiddles his fingers and attacks the keys. A small plume of dust rises from the bowels of the instrument and as the vibrations increase in intensity a collection of plaques and trophies left on the top of the instrument begin to dance. This is entertainment! Soon the notes merge into a medley of songs the first of which is Trelawny—the Cornish anthem. Child with beer in hand is now fully refreshed and alive to the music. He begins to sing—rather badly and out of tune—but with sufficient attack to inspire others to contribute to a surprisingly harmonious rendition of the chorus. Child is particularly adept at singing word-like sounds at times when clearly, he does not remember the words—bleating occasional words as he recalls them. The effect is remarkably convincing and at times he will attempt to sing solo parts in this manner. A crew of female gig rowers enter the Inn as we complete our rendition of the anthem. The atmosphere contagious they soon add female voices to the growing chorale. The more we sing, the more we drink and by the time Fred signals the end of his concert with a thumping chord on the piano. Not the Star Attraction
Tresco - Throughout the afternoon a queue of 'spectators' steadily grows and watch the game. Our illusion that we are the attraction is blown sky high when without warning we are marshalled off the field whilst a helicopter flies over the Abbey pool and lands with much noise and wind on the very ’track’ we are playing upon. The awaiting crowd boards, the helicopter rises in the air and with peace restored the cricket resumes with one spectator present. |
