St. Warna
St. Agnes - With cricket scheduled to start at 4.00pm there is time for a coastal ramble onto a footpath where we cross fields where campers’ shelter behind stone hedges, eventually passing through a small gate onto rugged coastal downs. We stop beside a stone maze at Troy Town which is said to have been laid out by the son of the lighthouse keeper in 1729 but may be much older. However, any buried evidence of its origins may have been destroyed during an unofficial rebuild in 1988. A short hop from this maze we encounter St. Warna’s Well — a mystical hole of water. A few of us drop coins and make a wish. Due to a long dry summer most of the water has evaporated and the coins sink into black treacle, laced with rabbit droppings. St. Warna also smells a wee rancid. We continue to follow the footpath until stopping beside a cluster of rocks where there is nothing ahead of us except water. Apple Derivative Day (Uncut version)
Saturday - We visit the Seven Stones. The building is empty but the door open. Inside the landlord (Mr. Goddard) suddenly appears. Cricket team?” he enquires. “Yes, and thirsty ones.” Peter replies, requesting a pint. “Sorry. I don’t have any. I’ve been waiting all week for a supply to come in.” Mr. Goddard points to the tea towels draped over the hand-pumps. Peter twitches (badly), he had not prepared himself for a bar without beer. “I’ve got cider!” states the Landlord, waving a dusty bottle in his hand...and some scrumpy.” He points to a barrel at the back of the bar. Oh Dear! At this moment the concept of an apple derivative day (ADD) is born, and it is without question the most mind blowing of all our Scillies experiences to date. Things begin to get out of hand when on the hoof we decide to mix drinks with apple derivatives. This alchemy has a devastating effect all who partake and by 4 o'clock - the game by chance being delayed for an hour due to some of the locals returning late from their fishing trips – the addictive, sometimes sweet, sometimes lumpy but always alcoholic beverages have pickled our brains. “My numb is head.” remarks H, an expression that quickly gains Hoot Toots folklore status and has been often repeated up to the present day. Thankfully the cricket ground is a pleasant twenty-five-minute walk from the Inn. “Provided you can walk straight, you’ll find the ground.” Mr. Goddard remarks whilst counting the stash of cash that has suddenly filled his till. Spoons leads our merry jig up the road to Higher Town then falls over. Peter spasmodically bursts into song. Jim extinguishes his pipe fearing a spark may ignite the alcohol fumes and low him up and H holds his head in his hands yelling "What have we done?". By 4.00pm when we arrive at Pool Green the Hoot Toots tour management claim a moral victory having against all odds marshalled the entire cider sodden team across the island without casualty. |
